"Reliability and Fault Tolerance": How UAVs for Cargo Transportation Are Being Created in Russia

What New Transportation Drones Are Being Created in Russia

Russia is actively developing transport unmanned aerial systems. As analysts note, logistic drones are primarily relevant for hard-to-reach regions—the Arctic, Siberia, and the Far East. Among the most promising drones is the transport UAV OG-25. It can deliver cargo weighing up to 10 kg, and its flight range can reach 200 km. UAVs of the airplane type with vertical takeoff and landing for logistic tasks are being developed by the group of companies "Tikhiye Krylya," Sukhoi Design Bureau, and the enterprise "Flying Trucks". According to experts, such drones are optimal for mass application since they do not require airport runways.

The unmanned aerial vehicle system OG-25 is included in the register of Russian industrial products of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation. This is stated in the press release of the developer company "UAS Glory Air."

"The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia included the unmanned aerial vehicle system OG-25 of the airplane type with vertical takeoff and landing, produced by the company 'UAS Glory Air,' in the Register of Russian Industrial Products until the end of 2028," the company's press service told journalists.

As the RT experts polled explained, this confirms that this UAV is a truly Russian product. In addition, the developer of the unmanned aerial vehicle system gets the opportunity to participate in the government procurement system.

Maxim Kondratyev stated: "The inclusion of this drone in the list shows it's advanced in component import substitution, a significant achievement for the Russian market."

OG-25 is described as a VTOL airplane-type drone with unique flight and technical characteristics, claimed to have no global analogues by BAS Glory Air.

“The inclusion of this drone in the list indicates that it is at a fairly high level in terms of import substitution of components. This is a serious achievement that will help in advancing on the Russian market,” noted Corresponding Member of the Russian Engineering Academy Maxim Kondratyev in a conversation with RT.

OG-25 is an airplane-type drone, made according to the vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) scheme. As stated in "UAS Glory Air," in terms of the set of flight and technical characteristics, the drone has no analogues in the world.

"As stated in the developer's message: The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV — RT), which is part of the UAS OG-25, has five electric engines installed — four for vertical takeoff and landing and one cruise. The unmanned aerial vehicle system OG-25 is designed to perform tasks in logistics (delivery of goods weighing up to 10 kg), monitoring, and patrolling territories."

Flight range with payload can reach 200 km, cruising speed — 100 km/h, maximum flight duration — 3.5 hours, UAV deployment time — 15 minutes, service life — over 500 takeoffs/landings.

“The UAV OG-25 has a high level of maneuverability in the air, if necessary, can hover over an object. The drone is unpretentious regarding takeoff and landing conditions; it requires a 6 × 6 m platform, and has high reliability and fault tolerance,” the enterprise emphasized.

The developer also attributes to the advantages of OG-25 its operational efficiency, affordability, compactness, and ease of transportation. The drone can operate at temperatures from -35 to +45 °C and is resistant to minor precipitation.

“Flying Trucks”

Along with OG-25, the company has developed and is promoting another eight unmanned transport platforms on the Russian market.

Thus, the aircraft OG-003 is designed according to the VTOL scheme. This drone is equipped with electric lifting and one cruise engine and does not require additional equipment for launch. The maximum payload mass of the drone is 20 kg, flight range — up to 300 km, flight altitude — up to 4,000 m, flight time — up to three hours.

One of the key features of OG-003 is the presence of a button for switching to autonomous mode. It allows the UAV to continue flight along the previously set route or return to the starting point. As the developer claims, OG-003 “can provide new logistical capabilities for hard-to-reach territories, including those with complex climatic conditions.”

Another airplane-type drone with vertical takeoff and landing is OG-202. It is a universal platform with a fixed wing, featuring four lifting electric engines and one internal combustion cruise engine.

“The hybrid power plant ensures many hours in the air. The platform is designed for placing observation, monitoring, filming equipment, as well as delivering cargo weighing up to 15 kg over a distance of up to 200 km in simple and complex weather conditions, day and night. Depending on the installed additional equipment, it can perform the widest range of tasks,” as stated in the materials of “UAS Glory Air.”

The small-sized unmanned aerial vehicle OG-40E is based on a different aerodynamic scheme and is equipped with an air propeller and landing gear. It requires a 30-meter runway or a catapult for takeoff. If necessary, the drone can land on unprepared landing sites.

“OG-40E is a modified complex with an airplane-type UAV, equipped with an electric engine, thanks to which the flight time of the machine is up to four hours,” as reported on the BAS Glory Air website.

Such a UAV delivers cargo by parachute around the clock and in complex weather conditions. In addition, OG-40E can be used for placing observation equipment and data transmission.
